Haryana Steelers stalled Jaipur Pink Panthers’ advances to win 30-26 at the Harivansh Tana Bhagat Indoor Stadium in Ranchi on Thursday. Haryana’s Wazir Singh was the highest scorer of the match (10 points) with Surender Nada completing his High 5 as well. Tushar Patil (8 points) and Pawan Kumar (7 points) led the Jaipur attack but their efforts weren’t enough.

Wazir started the match with intent, picking up a bonus in the first raid of the match and taking out Manjeet Chhillar in his next. Jaipur picked up their first point through Chhillar’s sturdy tackle. The first quarter saw minimal action with Haryana taking a slender lead at 6-5.

The next quarter had some action in store as Patil pulled off a fabulous super raid in the 17th minute to give Jaipur a three-point lead. However, Haryana came back strongly with a super tackle just before halftime, and the neck-and-neck opening period ended at 12-12.

The second half started with both teams showcasing their defensive prowess and pulling off two tackles each to start the scoreboard ticking. However, a two-point raid from Ashish Chhokar reduced Jaipur to two men on the mat. Within minutes Jaipur were handed the first All-Out of the match in the 28th minute as Haryana led 24-16 at the end of the third quarter. Nada also completed his sixth High 5 of the season in the process.

Jaipur, however, fought on and soon Kumar pulled off a super raid in the 33rd minute to reduce the deficit to four points. But Haryana’s super tackle a minute later gave them a six-point lead. With few minutes remaining on the clock, Haryana resorted to killing time on the mat and allowing their strong defence to do the talk. Jaipur did try to narrow the gap through quick raids at the death but Haryana managed to get back to winning ways with a 30-26 victory. The first match between these two sides earlier in the season had ended in a tie.
