The first Commonwealth Kabaddi Championship is here. Thirteen men's teams and ten women's teams have gathered at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad for nine days of mat action from 23 to 31 October 2026. It is the first time kabaddi has been given a Commonwealth stage of its own, and for a lot of these nations it is the biggest tournament they have ever played in.

Both competitions use the same simple structure. Teams play everyone in their group once, the group stage decides who goes through, and the top sides meet in the semi-finals on 30 October. The winners of those semi-finals play for gold on 31 October.
With seven teams in men's Group A and six in Group B, the groups are not the same size, so a single bad night costs a Group B side more than it costs a team in Group A. In the women's draw, five teams per group means four matches each and very little room to recover from a slow start.
India are the biggest name in world kabaddi, and the hosts here, and both squads carry 14 players.

Kabaddi has spent the last decade pushing outwards from South Asia, and this is the clearest sign yet of how far it has travelled. Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda are all here on the men's side. So are Australia, Canada, England and Scotland. For most of them this is a first proper international title to chase.
The women's event carries the same weight. Ten nations with ten different kabaddi stories, playing for the first Commonwealth gold medal in the sport. Whatever the results, the mat in Ahmedabad is the widest the game has ever been spread.
It runs from 23 October to 31 October 2026. The group stage covers 23 to 29 October, the semi-finals are on 30 October and both gold medal matches are on 31 October.
All matches are at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Thirteen teams in the men's competition and ten in the women's competition.
Kabaddi is not on the Commonwealth Games programme. The Commonwealth Kabaddi Championship is a separate standalone event for Commonwealth nations, and 2026 is its first edition.
Surjeet Singh captains the India men's team with Naveen Kumar as vice-captain. Nidhi Sharma captains the India women's team with Ritu Mitharwal as vice-captain.
Matches are broadcast LIVE on Star Sports and streamed on JioHotstar.
